The inner-city Institute of Notre Dame was in an already-precarious position, with declining enrollment and financial woes. The COVID-19 pandemic was too much for the 173-year-old school to survive, the School Sisters of Notre Dame said, and they closed it in June. But supporters hope to resurrect Baltimore girls' Catholic high school, organizing as the group Saving IND. As one alumna says, "IND girls don't really take no for an answer, so we're going to keep fighting. We were taught well: As long as we have faith and work hard and pray, there's nothing we can't do."

Another Notre Dame, the big-name university in Indiana, is proving to be a different cautionary tale, when it closed down in-person classes after just eight days saw a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases. Yesterday's NCR editorial says to take heed: Catholic colleges, learn from Notre Dame about pandemic reality.

In 'Life After the Pandemic,' Pope Francis hopes COVID-19 will change us. Fr. Tom Reese's column highlights some of the inspiration found in a new collection of Francis' speeches.

Sr. Tracey Horan has always liked a variety of sights while running or hiking, but when she moved to Nogales, Mexico, her route options were more limited. Carving a well-worn path around a big field next to her house, she has found in five hundred laps the path to wonder and awe.

This week's letters to the editor focus on reader's thoughts on the Sojourners controversy — including a letter from Sojourners' founder and president, Jim Wallis, responding to NCR's recent article about the upheaval over an essay about white supremacy and the Catholic Church.
